Overview

Research networks for postgraduate students are common and provide valuable platforms for students to test and progress their research and to disseminate their research outcomes. A comparable forum for undergraduate art, design and media specialist students appears not to exist. It is recognised that such undergraduate events can provide important opportunities for students to advance their research; to learn with others, to progress their ideas further and to celebrate their final year research.

This project and its annual collaborative symposia aims to help students; to provide an opportunity for students to develop their research work and for students and staff to work collaboratively.

The 'Designs on Research' HEA funded free workshop was hosted at the Arts University College at Bournemouth, Dorset, UK on the 25th June 2012. Information is provided within the blog accordingly.

Academic Conference Posters: sources for guidance

A variety of universities and organisations offer guidance on the design of an academic conference poster. The suggested methods used to create posters range from the use of set templates through to the use of Powerpoint. Approaches to the design of posters are often determined by a discipline 'style'.

We recognise that our art, design and media students will utilise their creative skills to produce poster designs that reflect their specialism and that they will often explore the very notion of a poster and how it communicates.

Some interesting sources that provide guidance on conference posters include:

Edinburgh Napier University: http://www2.napier.ac.uk/gus/writing_presenting/academic_posters.html

Glasgow University: http://www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_115291_wn.pdf

Research themes and work in progress

Graphic Design undergraduates select a research theme which they pursue over approximately 6 months to a year. The theme becomes a core focus and research embraces a range of sources and avenues to follow. Interestingly the selection of themes each year highlights specific topical themes and issues.

Students and poster designs

The walls of many universities display an array of posters for various events and activities.
To use the poster as a vehicle to help communicate research ideas within the studio/classroom can offer an interesting experience. Image of students at AUCB event in 2010.

25th June 2012

We thank the Higher Education Academy for making our event on the 25th June 2012 possible.

Places are free - but need to be booked - and we welcome colleagues to sunny Bournemouth, Dorset, for what we hope will see the creation of further partnerships to extend the collabortaive undergraduate symposium. Currently 3 universities join together: the Arts University at Bournemouth (AUCB); Cardiff Metroplitan University and Coventry University.

Keynote speaker: Ruth Dineen NTF

We are delighted to confirm that HEA National Teaching Fellow Ruth Dineen will join us at the Designs on Research workshop on the 25 June 2012. Ruth will explore how the collaborative opportunities for students to work cross institution are important.
Alexandra Clarke, final year student BA(Hons) Graphic Design, Arts University College at Bournemouth (AUCB), will also co-present to provide reflections and advice on how the collaborative undergraduate symposium can help progress research.

Writing Pad

Thursday's (29/03/12) Writing Pad event 'Writing in Creative Practice: Thinking through Writing and Making' at Staffordhire University offered useful ideas for stimulating and supporting students' writing approaches. Pat Francis offered valuable examples of tactics and materials to use in developing writing through a creative workshop organised by Dr. Alke Groppel-Wegener. A further event in May is to follow. A great range of participants created a lively day.

The value of the poster

At the recent Redesigning (Graphic) Design Education workshop at the University of Derby (14 March 2012), graphic designer/writer Adrian Shaughnessy presented provocatively the claim that 'no one designs posters any more.' However it appears that the poster is indeed alive and kicking - as evidenced by The Poster journal, published in recent years and the wealth of posters that are to be found internationally. The poster is an old favourite of students - a fast ephemeral form that can communicate a myriad of ideas, messages...

This academic year's event

The 2011/12 annual symposia saw students working together in a lively Pecha Kucha session, group design work and a major poster show. Prizes were awarded to the top three posters - as judged by all.

2011/12 event

Poster design: Lauren Davidson BA(Hons)Graphic Design Level 6, Arts University at Bournemouth, 2011.

The annual symposium brought together BA (Hons) Graphic Design final year students from the Arts University College at Bournemouth and Cardiff Metroplitan University and Coventry University - students shared in their research work - through presentations, group design work and poster exhibition. It is hoped further universities will join this exciting event.

The opportunity for students to develop further and use their research experience beyond the assessment requirement of the course could help students further in their careers. It could inspire their research aspirations and support their application to postgraduate study or research related vocational roles and contexts.
